The long term goals of our laboratory are to investigate the mitochondrial and metabolic signaling in cardiovascular and kidney diseases and aging, in order to discover novel therapeutics targets to prevent and treat diseases. We have previously shown the critical roles of mitochondrial oxidative stress in cardiac aging, hypertension and heart failure, using genetic models of mice overexpressing mitochondrial targeted catalase (mCAT) as well as mitochondrial protective peptides. Our current projects investigate mitochondrial and metabolic signaling in cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure, aging, acute kidney injury and chronic kidney diseases. Our approach utilizes mouse models, clinical samples, mammalian and human cell cultures, and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) to study the above diseases.
